Hair loss in Black women is unfortunately very common. On the Facebook talk show Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett-Smith says that a lot of people were asking her why she has been wearing head wraps recently and she chose this moment to address her sturggle with hair loss. Pinkett-Smith said:
It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day, and then just handfuls of hair in my hands...
It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear. That's why I cut my hair and continued to cut it
At the beginning of the year, Pinkett-Smith cut her lob into a short, asymmetrical hairstyle just in time for the new year, took a selfie, and posted it on Instagram with the caption, "Then came 2018." But while everyone assumed she wanted to change up her look, the specific reason for her hair change was to help make her hair loss more manageable. Pinkett-Smith admits to struggling to accept the fact that she is losing her hair, especially since her long, thick tresses had almost become part of her identity.
My hair has been a big part of me,
Taking care of my hair has been a beautiful ritual — and having the choice to have hair or not. And then one day to be like, ‘Oh my God, I might not have that choice anymore … ’
Now, Pinkett-Smith has learned to accepted her hair loss and loves wearing turbans and headscarves. She looks confident in her new look. Pinkett-Smith says:
When my hair is wrapped, I feel like a queen.
